Overview

Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP)

Located in Morong, Bataan, the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant is the Philippines’ only nuclear power facility and stands as a significant landmark in the country’s energy history. Constructed in the late 1970s, the plant was designed to generate 620 megawatts of electricity and was part of the government’s initiative to address the energy crisis of that era.

Although the plant was completed in 1984, it was never fueled or operated due to a combination of safety concerns, political changes, and public opposition following the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. Despite never becoming operational, the BNPP remains intact and is maintained by the government for educational and potential future use.

Today, the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant serves as a vital learning site for students, engineers, and energy professionals. It offers guided tours that provide insights into nuclear energy, engineering design, and the challenges of energy policy and infrastructure development in the Philippines. The facility continues to spark discussions on the role of nuclear power in the country's future energy mix.
